Michael Pollan’s mantra, “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants… instead of edible food-like substances,” has become a cultural meme that is simple enough for anyone to program into their subconscious mind. Similarly, the 64 Food Rules prescribed in this latest book for eating right or rather, healthy, are quite simple, memorable, and doable and based on his simple food philosophy. Pollan’s idea for this easy-to-read book came from two doctors who read his last book, “In Defense of Food”, which ended with a handful of tips for eating well: simple ways to navigate the treacherous landscape of modern food and the often-confusing science of nutrition.

“What I would love is a pamphlet I could hand to my patients with some rules for eating wisely,” one M.D. said.

“You can’t imagine what I see on the insides of people these days wrecked by eating food products instead of food,” said another M.D., a transplant cardiologist.

The author’s goal, a professor at UC Berkeley who teaches us how to choose, prepare and eat food “… instead of edible food-like substances,” is to show that “a healthy diet is a whole lot simpler than the food industry and many nutritional scientists — what I call the Nutritional Industrial Complex — would have us believe,” Pollan stated in an email half a month ago when publicizing his newest foodie book.

If you want to “disease proof” yourself from the sickening Western diet, then the 64 Food Rules belong on your kitchen shelf. You can purchase your own copy for a full list of his pocket guide food rules or purchase a digest of his 64 rules to 10 on bookmarks but here’s a literal taste of what he touts:

#11:Avoid food products advertised on television.

Avoid food products that contain high fructose corn syrup. (Hint: This is a highly processed GMO food.

#17:Eat food cooked by humans, not corporations.

#19:If it came from a plant, eat it; if it was made in a plant, don’t.

Eat animals that have themselves eaten well.

Pay more, eat less.

#25: Eat your colors.

#28:Buy a freezer.

#36:Don’t eat breakfast cereals that change the color of the milk.

Serve a proper portion and don’t go back for seconds.

#46:Stop eating before you’re full and try to eat only to 67 to 80 per cent capacity.

#47:Eat when you are hungry, not when you are bored.

#58:Eat all the junk food you want as long as you cook it yourself.

#60:Treat treats as treats.

#64:Break the rules once in a while.

And Michael is always on the lookout for sensible, everyday food rules so if you wish to assist him in creating “a compendium of such rules, across cultures and also time” as he says, then feel free to email Michael Pollan at pollanfoodrules@gmail.com and add yours to the list of food rules.
