Nightshades are the only plants that grow at night.
Nightshades are a diverse group of foods, herbs and drugs, shrubs, trees and some plants are parasites — so diverse that it includes gogi berries, white potatoes and belladonna. Plants in the nightshade family bear flowers with five sepals, five petals, five stamens, and a solitary pistil that in most species ripens into a berry. The yellow-centered, bell-shaped flowers are basically five-parted. The petals are fused into a tube, on the inside of which are borne the stamens. The nightshade scientific family name is Solanaceae and the order is Polemoniales. The commonly named “nightshade” includes over 2,800 plant species, many with very different properties (ex. lectin content) and constituents. These toxic vegetables, fruits, herbs, spices and poisonous drugs contain glycoalkaloids, a natural defense against disease, insects and predators.

When one looks at the sad/standard American diet based on processed meat/hamburger, potatoes/French fries, and sugar/Soda, you will understand why people crave nightshades: Potatoes and tomatoes are very high in potassium and help counter the high sodium of animal foods. Also, nightshades may aid in the digestion of fatty, dense proteins. We crave these combinations like meat and potatoes, or pizza with cheese and tomatoes, because our bodies unconsciously strive to achieve balance.
However, many people are sensitive or allergic to nightshade foods which contain dangerous toxins that destroy white blood cells
and which cause a laundry list of unpleasant symptoms: kidney stones, ulcers, rheumatoid arthritis, breathing problems, unconsciousness, digestive problems, skin problems, trembling, weakness, nerve problems and paralysis, and energy problems are some of the negatives. It is the alkaloids found in nightshade plants which cause adverse nerve-muscle function and digestive function in humans and animals (nightshades turn into a poison in the intestines thus causing the swelling and pain)
and compromise bone and joint strength and function that are the reason for eliminating nightshade foods from the diet,
especially for those with joint pain as they have adverse reactions when eaten. Cooking, that is, steaming, boiling, and baking
all help reduce the alkaloid content of nightshades only by 40% whereas eliminating them altogether will stop aches and pains and improve health.

There are four basic types of alkaloids (ring-like structure with element of nitrogen) found in nightshades which have a negative effect on human and animal health. For example, steroid alkaloids in white potatoes block activity of an enzyme in nerve cells called cholintesterase. A second type of problem potentially related to the potato alkaloids involves damage to the joints caused by inflammation and altered mineral status (notably calcium depletion). White potatoes contain solanine, a toxic glycoalkaloid in plants of solanum. Solanine is metabolized to the sugar solanose. Other toxins found in potatoes are scopolamine , atropine.
Earl Mindell in his book, Unsafe at Any Meal, stated the following concerning potatoes, “Solanine, present in and around these
green patches and in the eyes that have sprouted, can interfere with the transmission of nerve impulses, and cause jaundice, abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.”
Drug addiction is the only known clinical evidence on the impact of the more drug-like nicotine alkaloids (and solanine) in nightshade foods on body systems.

Even if you have no health problems relating to nightshade food consumption, take precautions to avoid excessive intake of alkaloids from these nightshade foods, especially with green and sprouted potatoes:
1. Store potatoes 1-3 weeks in cool, dry place away from light to avoid exposure to light which increases alkaloid formation
2. wash all potatoes and cut out all green areas before cooking. Don’t eat bitter-tasting potatoes.
3. Do not eat waxed potatoes. Waxes do not help reduce greening and can increase potato decay by cutting down on gas exchange in and out of the potato.
